The Western Area Football Association (WAFA) has today, December 9th, 2021, officially unveiled their international under-12/15 youth football competition at the Siaka Steven stadium cabin.
The unveiling ceremony was graced by members of the football family representatives from the Sierra Leone Football Association(SLFA), ministry of sports, and the ambassador of sports .
In his opening declaration to the gathering, the general secretary of the Western Area football association (WAFA) Benjamin Gordon officially opened the press conference and thanked their partners for supporting them. He extends appreciativeness to Orange mobile company for supporting the competition.
The Chairman of Western Area Football Association(WAFA) Pastor Philip Buck said this is the first of its kind in Sierra Leone to host a youth U-12/15 competition in the subregion on one occasion.
The WAFA Chairman disclosed that they are open to Orange mobile company to come on board full-time in all their competitions. He said the Western Area football body will do everything within their power to make sure the competition be an annual event.
During the unveiling ceremony; the winner and runners-up trophies and medals were displayed. A prize was shown that will serve as the man of the match award in all matches throughout the competition.
In the competition template read out: size 5 will be the official match ball for both under-12/15 clubs.
-Teams are to register 25 players for both U-12 and U-15.
-For the U-12 teams, there is no limit to changes, while for the U-15, 5 players per game.
-Every official who failed to come along with their should count themselves out.
In the under-12 category, 6 teams are to participate in the competition; three teams in two separate groups with two to qualify from each to the semifinals. While for the U-15- 8 clubs to participate in two groups of four clubs each and two clubs qualifyy to the semifinals.
International participating clubs in the competition have started arriving in Freetown to witness the opening ceremony.
The Sierra Leone football association representative Sorie Ibrahim Sesay augments SLFA’s appreciation to Orange for collaborating with WAFA to bring the competition to reality. He said WAFA is known for organizing youth football as they have exhibited it in their last WAFA searching for stars tournament.
The Director of competition at SLFA disclosed that the FA has shown interest to participate in the confederation of Africa football (CAF) maiden Pan-Africa school football competition: with such a tournament it will be easy to pick the best to represent Sierra Leone.
The Ministry of sports was represented by its deputy secretary madam Femusu Samba who communicated the ministry of sports’ best wishes through the competition.
The WAFA international youth football competition will commence on December 10th 2021 at the Siaka Steven Stadium between Orthodox football club vs United Eagles.
No price money, but the winner will take home a giant trophy and gold medals customized.
